How to report fraudulent unemployment compensation claims

Written by Kristen O’Connell, CPP | Jul 15, 2021 10:51:09 AM

Fraudulent unemployment compensation claims are on the rise. It is important to report false claims because they increase unemployment taxes for businesses and strain Pennyslvania's Unemployment Trust Fund. Trout CPA has assisted our clients with resolving these claims. Below are two common scenarios.

What should I do if I receive an unemployment notice for an employee who never worked for me?

Check the "never worked here" box on the form and mail it to the PA Department of Labor & Industry, per the instructions on paper.

What should I do if I receive an unemployment notice for an employee who still works for me?

Speak with the employee to see if they opened a claim. If they did not file the unemployment claim, instruct the employee to report the fraud to the PA Department of Labor & Industry at https://benefits.uc.pa.gov/vosnet/ReportFraud.aspx or by calling the PA UC Fraud Hotline at 800-692-7469. To report Federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) fraud, visit  https://www.dlisecureweb.pa.gov/FRTS/IdentityTheft.aspx
